The Royal Barge Procession will be held in Bangkok this October to celebrate the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
BANGKOK, THAILAND, August 30, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Visitors to Bangkok will be able to take in the sights of an historic Royal Barge Procession in October 2011.
The event will be held on October 22nd to commemorate the 84th birthday of Thai ruler King Bhumibol Adulyadej, marking only the 16th time this procession has taken place during his long reign.
It will see barges carrying the revered Buddha image and members of the royal family down the Chao Phraya river to present robes to the monks at the Temple of Dawn, coinciding with the end of the three-month Buddhist rains' retreat.
Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will preside over the ceremony, which begins at 15:30 local time and will involve a flotilla of 52 traditional-style barges arranged in five columns, with 2,200 sailors to act as oarsmen.
The ceremony will end at 17:30 after the barges have completed their 4.5km journey, which will encompass the stretch of the river between Thonburi Bridge and Phra Phutta Yodfa Bridge.
King Bhumibol is the world's longest-serving head of state, having been crowned in 1946, with the last Royal Barge Procession coinciding with his diamond jubilee in 2006.
